A Reasonable Life
We are so proud of human reason
ridiculing the frog
that wanted to be an ox
that Aesop wrote about to teach
not the power of thought
but the consequence of pride
like the raven that was
tricked out of his cheese by vanity
and by greed of the wily fox.
If we were wiser than the frog,
more humble than the raven,
we would not live in their world
where vain frogs blow themselves up
trying to be great,
where proud ravens mistake a croak
for a song.
